Easter Egg Hunt!
Santa
Winter Urn Workshops Thank you to all who signed up and came to the winter urn workshops - it was a lot of fun! There were a lot of great looking planters that went out of here and a lot of happy people. It is interesting to see the many combinations of greens, accents and colours that people put together to make it their own. One customer was in to buy her greens to make her planters at home and saw one of the workshops just ending and loved the planters we had created and signed up immediately for the afternoon workshop - here is her email inviting others to come out: I'm sure many of us received the email from Georgina Gardens about their Christmas planters seminars for $30. I assumed that the price covered the instruction on how to make a planter. WRONG!! I went to the garden centre about 11:30 Saturday morning to buy boughs to make my own planter with some faux material I bought at Dollarama. Just then, these women emerged from the back of the centre with these fabulous looking planters. Of course, I asked a million questions! Here's what I discovered: This is a working workshop. Everyone starts with a winter proof pot filled with moist soil and 2 large bundles of boughs (1 each cedar and white pine). After you get all your green in, you can go out into the store and select WHATEVER OTHER MATERIALS YOU WANT for your planter! They have a huge selection of beautiful planter material and it's like being a kid let loose in a candy store and being told to help yourself! I said: "Sign me up for this afternoon's session!" I had clipped a photo from the most recent Gardening Life that I wanted to copy. The container featured 3 red-pink protea blooms that I knew would be costly. So I had already bought 3 clusters of red-pink poinsettias at Dollarama ($3). I took them and my own giant pine cones to the workshop with me. (They had giant pine cones at the garden centre but I saw no reason to be unnecessarily greedy when I already had some!) The staff at the garden centre were just fabulous in helping me create my 'dream' design from a combination of their materials and the ones I brought along. They even wired and staked my pine cones so I could 'plant' them where I wanted them! In addition to the basics, my design called for a bundle of Magnolia Leaves ($13.), a bundle of stems with red berries ($13, burgundy dogwood branches. Plus we added bits and pieces of other material that they had available. I was absolutely thrilled with the results! (SEE ATTACHED PHOTO.) And to top it off, they generously sprayed the whole planter with a preparation that will preserve it until March! ALL THIS FOR $30! This is a workshop for novice to expert. They had a blind lady in the morning session and taught her how to use her fingers and hands to decide where to place material. (A friend had come along to cut stems for her.) I would have been proud to have her arrangement gracing my front porch! And for expert designers like Joyce Cathcart, it would be like reaching the promised land to be able to walk around and pick your materials and not think about price! So for anyone who wants a Christmas planter, my advice is to run, don't walk to take advantage of this fabulous offer! Closer to Christmas, I think they are going to have sessions for table centrepieces and wreaths. (And for those who don't have time or interest in making it themselves, they had lovely planters ready to go at very good prices.) Anyway, this is my Christmas present to all of you! Have fun! And Merry Christmas! Best regards, Delores Ritchie Way to go everyone that came out!! Below are just some of the pictures of planters people came up with.

4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt - 2008 Thank you to all of you that came to our Easter Egg Hunt on Good Friday - March 21. It was a huge success! We collected 700 lbs of food for the local Food Bank. Back again this year by popular demand was the Easter Bunny himself as well as Jazz the Clown. Many kids (and staff) lined up to get their faces painted by Jazz. Everyone looked a little more Easter-ie and Spring like when she was done with us. The Easter Bunny hid eggs around the straw maze and stopped to take pictures with the egg hunters, did some dancing and helped to hand out balloons.
3rd Annual Speakers Corner - September 2007 Thanks to all those who came to our 3rd Annual Speakers Corner 'Tea in the Garden'. It was a huge success! And a big thank you for the donations received for the Terry Fox Run - from our landscape customers and our Speakers Corner - we raised just under $9,500!!! Brian the Bug Guy has continued to encourage us to use beneficial bugs in our lawn and gardens; such as, nematodes for the grubs, chinch bugs, crane fly and more. He also encouraged us to use Turf Maize as an alternative to chemical weed killers to get rid of weeds in the lawn. Bob from Spear Seeds taught us many new things about fertilizing and weed control for our lawns, seeding tricks and how to take care of your lawn properly to discourage those pesky bugs and weeds. Thanks for the drought resistant grass seed samples Bob!! Shirley inspired many people with her beautiful and easy to create fall planters, urn inserts, as well as Thanksgiving centre pieces. She even gave us a taste of what to expect for our Christmas urns and planters. - Come by in December to see our custom made urn inserts. Kathy again, gave us many beneficial tips on perennials and how to care for them organically. She showed us what plants complement each other and help to ward off pests and diseases. She also showed us how to separate hostas quickly and easily - Thanks to those volunteers as well, who helped separate hostas - they got to take some hostas home with them. Kathy after each seminar taught the crowed about being a True Steward of the Earth. Everyone received their own Colorado Spruce seedling (from the Town of Georgina)to take home to plant and nurture. See everyone again next year!
Steward of the Earth School Program - April-May 2007 St. Thomas Aquinas CES, in Keswick, participated in our 1st Steward of the Earth School Program and was a huge success. All of the students received a pamphlet on the Benefits of Trees, a Steward of the Earth magnet, a Steward of the Earth pin, an information letter outlining the Steward of the Earth program, planting instructions and the competition. The students had to bring the seedling home, plant it and take a picture of it and send it into the garden centre. They were then given a certificate congratulating them on becoming a True Steward of the Earth. Whichever class at the end of the 2 weeks had the most certificates, won a pizza lunch and a tree planted at the school in their honour. Congratulations to Ms. Wilma Bunnik's Sr. Kindergarten class for bringing back the highest number of Steward of the Earth certificates. Way to go!! |
